The incredible rookie season for Dallon Murty continued Sunday as the Malvern Bank Super Late Model Racing Series made its return to Columbus, Nebraska’s U.S. 30 Speedway.
The final stop on the West Series’ 3-state tripleheader weekend took the tour back to the Cornhusker State for a Sunday showdown for the Tom Kobus Memorial. A field of 25 cars packed the pit area for the series’ 10th all-time visit to the high-banked 1/3-mile in Columbus.
The West Series Points Leader Jesse Sobbing was the fastest in Keyser Manufacturing Qualifying as he stopped the clock at 15.602 seconds to lead the first group of drivers. The second group saw past U.S. 30 Speedway Winner Brian Kosiski on top with a lap of 16.149 seconds. The third and final group was led by Kyle Berck as the 7-Time Series Champion clocked in at 16.292 seconds.
Later in the afternoon, Charlie McKenna, Corey Zeitner and Andrew Kosiski were the three heat race winners. After the points were tallied, Dallon Murty was the top point earner. This gave Murty the first chance at a $1,000 bonus for the Skyline Materials Lucky 6th Place Starting Spot. Murty initially declined, but he ended up starting sixth anyway.
After Jaken Neal took the win the Predator Custom Trailers B-Feature, the stage was set for the 30-lap, $3,000 to win Tom Kobus Memorial main event.
Kicking off the feature, pole-sitter Corey Zeitner jumped to the lead and would show the way for the first two laps before Jesse Sobbing took control of the lead. The Points Leader, like many drivers in the early stages of the race, utilized the low line around the speedway. Meanwhile, Dallon Murty hustled the outside banking of the U.S. 30 Speedway to overtake Zeitner and Kyle Berck for a spot on the podium.
As Sobbing and Murty came off corner four to complete lap 9, Murty charged off the outside lane to take over the race lead. Murty proceeded to pull away from the rest of the field using the outside lane to his advantage.
The first of 2 cautions came right at the halfway mark as Darrel DeFrance and Andy Eickhoff get together on the back stretch. Corey Zeitner and Tad Pospisil, who were third and fourth at the time, narrowly missed getting collected in the wreck.
The final caution came out with only five laps remaining following a 2-car spin in turn two. On the ensuing restart, Murty led while Sobbing and Kyle Berck both tried to slide through turns 1 and 2 trying to force a mistake out of Murty, but the Chelsea, Iowa would not be deterred.
After 30 laps, Dallon Murty, in his first-ever visit to U.S. 30 Speedway, captured his sixth win of the season making him the winningest driver in the Malvern Bank Series in 2025. As an added bonus, he started in the Skyline Materials Lucky 6th Place Starting Spot, so he would add an extra $1,000 on top of his $3,000 score. Murty became the first driver to win the Lucky 6th Place Challenge twice in one year after he won the challenge at Huset’s during the Silver Dollar Nationals weekend. Murty also became the seventh different winner with series in ten races at the U.S. 30 Speedway, and he completes the weekend sweep taking top honors at Park Jefferson, Shelby County, and U.S. 30 Speedways.
Jesse Sobbing would have to settle for another runner-up finish, but he would to his championship point lead after the race went final. Kyle Berck finished third while Corey Zeitner came in fourth, and Tad Pospisil rounded out the top five. A pair of honorable mentions go to Troy Morris III, who made his first ever Malvern Bank Series start, and Jordan Grabowski, who was in his second start for the Justin Zeitner owned team. The two modified drivers both recorded their first series top 10 finishes in Sunday’s feature with Morris finishing eighth and Grabowski in tenth.
After a busy weekend of bullring action, the West Series joins back up with the East for a pair of Dirt Track Bank Elite 8 Dual races in Iowa. On August 22nd, the tours head to the Marshalltown Speedway in Marshalltown for the 8th annual Dale DeFrance Memorial. The very next night, the series heads to the Adams County Speedway in Corning for the Ray Houck Memorial Late Model Showdown.
